Barastoc Horse launches Beet Range

In an Australian first, Barastoc has added to its extensive stable of horse feeds, launching a range that features super-fibre source, sugar beet pulp, as an ingredient. Barastoc’s sugar beet pulp range includes a reformulated stable favourite, Cool Command, in addition to a brand new pelleted feed, Competitor.

Sugar beet pulp, is a by-product of the sugar industry. After the sugar has been extracted from sugar beet, the fibrous portion of the sugar beet is dried. The end result is a high fibre shred that contains little to no sugar. In many countries, sugar beet pulp is used as an ingredient in horse feeds by feed manufacturers; alternatively riders add it separately to a ration to boost the digestible fibre content.

In Australia’s case sugar beet pulp is imported in a pelleted form and soaked before feeding. However, contrary to popular belief, it does not have to be soaked. Although soaking certainly helps to encourage the horse to ingest water, it can be a hassle as it must be soaked for each feeding, especially in hot conditions. Once soaked, the sugar beet pulp can quickly ferment making it unusable. When sugar beet pulp is used as an ingredient in muesli or pelleted feeds, it does not have to be soaked before feeding, removing a very inconvenient step in the process.

For our muesli feed, Barastoc Cool Command, the sugar beet pellets are processed into small flakes. The flakes are then evenly mixed through the feed during the manufacturing process. For all new Barastoc Competitor, the sugar beet pulp is added to the mixer along with the other ingredients before being conditioned and pelletised.

The benefits of feeding sugar beet pulp are immense.

  • Cool energy source for horses
  • Help maintain intestinal health
  • Slow release energy from highly digestible fibre
  • Increased fibre intake
  • Improved hydration
